Turn your bass up because you are in for a production
experience.
Jhené Aiko has subtly been building her name by appearing on
major albums by J. Cole, Drake, Childish Gambino, the list goes on and on. By
releasing her debut EP, she came on the map with singles like “Bed Peace”, “The
Worst” and “3:16AM” that took R&B buffs on a ride.
Listening to the album, you can’t help but admire the
credible musicians appearing on the EP along with the ridiculously powerful
beats and synths. With the first four songs featuring Vince Staples, Childish
Gambino, Kendrick Lamar and Ab-Soul, she transitions other audiences into her
project and sells them during her last three songs that poses you with the
question: Where have you been hiding, Jhené?
My personal favourites, “Bed Peace ft. Childish Gambino”, “WTH
ft. Ab-Soul”, and “Comfort Inn Ending (Freestyle)”, let you groove then hits
you with powerful beats that contradict her soft voice but work together for a
flawless project. I would go as far to say she revives Aaliyah in refreshing,
modern sound for the new millennium.
If you haven’t heard of this unaccredited artist then you
have deprived yourself for long enough! Jhené is ruthlessly making her way to
the big stage and when she does, we’ll all question how we lived without
listening to her. Check. Her. Out.
